Dubai's Control Tower, Wrapped in the Flag

Dubai's Control Tower, Wrapped in the Flag

The Overview

Every year, millions of travellers pass through Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel. One of the first things they see is its air traffic control tower, among the most recognised structures on the city's skyline. Its reinvention as a bold tribute to the United Arab Emirates was designed by COM8 STUDIO, from first concept to final artwork, with Joseph Graphics executing the transformation on the tower itself. A structure built for function became a symbol the whole country could point to.

Officials, a Dubai Police honour guard and Dubai Airports fire trucks gathered in front of the newly unveiled UAE flag DXB control tower.

The Challenge

Redesigning a landmark is not the same as designing a poster. The tower is an active, operational structure inside one of the world's busiest and most secure environments, seen from every runway, terminal and approaching aircraft. The brief carried a rare kind of pressure: honour the flag with the dignity it deserves, avoid the tired clichés that make most national creatives forgettable, and do it without altering the tower's iconic form or interrupting live operations.

A design that looked right in a mockup but wrong at full height, or from a departing plane, would fail. There was no margin for "close enough."

The gap between the tower that stood there and the one it needed to become was the whole assignment.

Before: the DXB air traffic control tower in its previous Expo 2020 Dubai livery, patterned in blue and yellow.
After: the same DXB control tower transformed into a vertical UAE flag design, with the gold DXB logo at its crown.

The Concept

The work started with a question rather than a colour palette: what should this tower say? The answer was not decoration, but identity.

The idea was to let the UAE flag run vertically down the tower's core, held within its distinctive white lattice frame, so the tower would read as the flag itself rather than just carry its colours. Red sits at the crown beneath the gold "DXB", with green, white and black running down the length of the structure. Three ideas guided every decision that followed: strength, unity, progress.

How We Did It

Turning that idea into a landmark took four disciplined stages, each with its own decisions and its own room for error.

Direction. Before drawing anything new, the team mapped what had to stay untouched, the proportions, the lattice frame and the round-the-clock operational role, and defined what the new design had to achieve in their place.

Visual sketch. The concept was worked out first by hand, testing how a flat national symbol could sit naturally on a tall, tapering, three-dimensional surface. Sketching kept the idea flexible long enough to solve that problem before anything was locked for production.

Visual sketch stage: the hand-drawn UAE flag concept for the tower, annotated with Strength, Unity, Progress, UAE Identity and Innovation in Design.

Vector format. The approved concept was rebuilt as precise vector artwork, the stage where the idea had to hold up against real-world constraints. Working from the tower's real dimensions and sightlines, the studio controlled every detail that decides whether a wrap reads cleanly at scale: colour gradients, element alignment and the placement of panel joints across the façade.

Vector format stage: the precise, production-ready vector artwork of the flag-wrapped tower on a white background.

Final implementation. With the artwork approved, COM8 STUDIO handed over a precise, production-ready design. Joseph Graphics carried out the execution, producing and installing it on a live, secure structure without disrupting operations, so the finished wrap held up from the ground, from the runway and from the air. Start to finish, the transformation was delivered in 40 days.

The Results and Recognition

The response was immediate. Within hours, images and videos of the wrapped tower were being shared by travellers, aviation enthusiasts, photographers and local media across every major platform.

Dubai Airports described the transformation as placing "national pride at the heart of Dubai's gateway."

No paid campaign drove any of it. The design earned its reach on its own, prompting millions of expressions of appreciation and recognition, because it captured a feeling people already had about their country.

Closing Thought

The tower didn't need a new shape or a louder colour. It needed to mean something. By keeping the design disciplined and true to both the flag and the structure, COM8 STUDIO turned a working piece of airport infrastructure into a landmark the country could take pride in.
